Sexually transmitted infections, often referred to as STIs, are infections that are passed between people during sexual activities or sexual contact. There are different types if STI’s- see here for more information.
They can usually be easily treated at a sexual health clinic. If they are left untreated, STI's can cause long-term health issues.
While some STI’s have symptoms, many do not, which mean many people do not know they have them. The only way to know is to get tested.
It is recommended that you get tested for STI's after each new sexual partner. It is particularly important to get tested if:
- You have symptoms of an STI
- A sexual partner has symptoms of an STI
- You're worried after having sex without a condom
- You're pregnant with symptoms of an STI
You can get tested and treated for an STI for free at a local Sexual Health Clinic. Find your nearest one using the NHS website.
If you live in London, you might be able to get a free home testing kit (delivered to you in a discreet box) from Sexual Health London.
