How do I register with a General Practitioner (GP)?

How to register
If you are unsure of where to register, you can use the  online GP search tool to find your local practice. This will usually need to be close to your registered address, as GP's often have catchment areas.

Once you have found a GP surgery, you will need to follow their instructions on the registration process. This is often online, and should take about 7 to 10 days (although this may vary from practice to practice).

If you are an international student, we recommend that you register with a doctor as soon as you arrive in the UK, as you will not be entitled to use the service until you are registered.

You may be asked to provide a student status letter for proof of your address. If so, please see the FAQ Where can I get a student status letter or a Council Tax exemption letter?

Urgent care
If you are not yet registered with a GP and you need access to medical services, there are alternative options available including A&E, urgent care centres and walk-in clinics.

Full details can be found on the NHS services - urgent and emergency care page.
