A pharmacist is an expert in medicine who can help you with health concerns.
All pharmacies can:
- give you advice about health and wellbeing
- sell you over-the-counter medicine for a range of minor illnesses like coughs, colds, sore throats, ear infections, aches and pains, urinary tract infections, and rashes
- give you the medicine you have already been prescribed (by a GP or another doctor)
- dispose of any unwanted or out-of-date medication you have
- tell you how to get specialist support if you need it
- answer questions about prescription or over-the-counter medicines, including how to take medicine safely.
Most pharmacists can now also offer prescription medicine for:
- impetigo (aged 1 year and over)
- infected insect bites (aged 1 year and over)
- earache (aged 1 to 17 years)
- sore throat (aged 5 years and over)
- sinusitis (aged 12 years and over)
- urinary tract infections (UTIs) (women aged 16 to 64 years)
- shingles (aged 18 years and over)
Some pharmacies also offer:
- Emergency contraception
- Chlamydia screening and treatment
- Support to stop smoking (Stop Smoking)
- Blood pressure, cholesterol and blood sugar testing
- Substance misuse support, including needle and syringe exchange schemes
- Weight management support.
You do not need an appointment to speak with a pharmacist. Most pharmacies offer a private room so you can speak to a pharmacist without being overheard. If they cannot help you themselves, they can refer you to a GP or other health professional.
