How can I be an Active Bystander?

All members of the LSBU community have a responsibility to treat others with respect and dignity, and to contribute to preventing unacceptable behaviours.

If you witness unacceptable behaviour, you can be an Active Bystander - this means that rather than doing nothing, you do something.

Above all, you should prioritise your safety. If someone is at risk of immediate harm, please call 999 immediately.

The 4 Ds of being an active bystander are:

  • Distract - do something to interrupt the behaviour, such as changing topic of conversation, spilling a drink or drawing attention to something else
  • Direct – speak up and directly address the abusive behaviour: 'that's not okay', or speak directly to the victim:  'this phone call is for you'
  • Delegate - get help from others who may be better equipped. In an emergency, you should always call 999. If on campus, you can contact security on 020 7815 6666 or on the SafeZone app
  • Delay - check in on the person who experienced the abusive behaviour. Make sure they know about their options for getting support, for example by directing them to Report + Support.
